Distributor - The role of the distributor
They think about: Who will want to see it?
Why will they want to see it?
How will they be persuaded to see it?

-They bring the film into the marketplace
Independent distrubutors try to find films to acquire the rights to and distribute
How do they do this?
They go to film festivals (There is a 52 week period when they find films)
-The distributor finds the USP
-They must consider the target audience for their market campaign (e.g. if it's a comedy, they amp up the laughs and jokes when advertising, promoting etc)
The core audiences are family groups and 15-24 year olds.

They also think about when the best time to release is. A similar movie could have the same release date - then they must decide if they will change the date.
Film research is very important for the distributor - they show the film to the target audience and make they do a questionnaire.
-Then they decide on a budget for the marketing and advertising etc
-Then they decide how they will get audiences to see the film
Advertising - e.g. billboards
Promotion - e.g. working with a radio station to promote
Publicity - e.g. premiere

Distribution - The Campaign

Distributor makes marketing campaign that has to look more exciting than similar films with a similar release date.

Mobile
They need synergy!


The distributor makes:
The poster - they are seeling the genre of the film and the concept
Teaser campaigns - They get people aware that the film is coming

The Trailer - Must portray the film well
Teaser trailer
Main trailer
Shorter main trailer (for adverts on tv)

If distributing foreign film, the trailer could have no subtitles so people think they are seeing a easy-watching film.

TV Spots
-They try to show:
Who's in it
The title of the film
The release date

Website
Viral marketing - a quiz

Publicity
They get editorial space e.g. magazine, interviews
Reviews - they see what people & critics are saying about the film

Tracking
They have to track the publics' awareness of the film and if people are interested in seeing it

Word of mouth MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT
Screening Programs

Opening Weekend - the films depends on this

There can be 5 or 6 distributors on a film
- There can be distributors for different countries that the film will be shown in


EXHIBITION

-In 2007 cinema viewing rose
-The start of the multiplex cinema

In 1950s cinema attendance was high, decreased in 1980s
in 1985 first multiplex in Milton Keynes and attendance increased

Which films?
Its very important which films the cinema shows
Location of cinema is also v. important

Audience - Exhibitors must understand their audience

They can put on events at the cinema that they think the audience will enjoy
FACT: 75% of those polled in a cinema didn't know the name of the cinema they were in

How does it affect cinema?
-Blockbusters can loose £4million on dvd sales
-No revenue so films loose money
-The quality of the pirate films are terrible
-The people who made the film loose a lot of money.
